What Is a USDOT Number?
Reviewed
A USDOT number is the registration number FMCSA assigns to a company that operates commercial motor vehicles. FMCSA tracks the company's safety record against it: audits, compliance reviews, crash investigations and roadside inspections. A USDOT number on its own doesn't let you haul other people's freight for pay across state lines; that takes operating authority as well.
Who needs a USDOT number
FMCSA's guidance says you generally need one if a vehicle in interstate commerce has a gross weight or weight rating of 10,001 pounds or more, carries more than 8 passengers (including the driver) for pay, carries more than 15 passengers, or hauls hazardous materials in amounts that need a safety permit. Many states, Texas, California and Florida among them, require a USDOT number for intrastate carriers too.
Private fleets register for one even though they never need for-hire authority. That's why a list of new USDOT numbers is a much wider group than a list of new for-hire carriers.
How it relates to MC authority
A for-hire interstate carrier applies for a USDOT number and operating authority in one Motus registration. The authority gets its own docket, the MC number. Since Motus, new USDOT numbers are randomized and show a suffix for the registration type, such as C for a property carrier with authority or V for a private carrier. In the 30 days ending October 19, 2026, 8,044 new carrier applications were filed and 5,591 carriers were granted authority.
Rookiefeed lists carriers by granted authority, not by new USDOT numbers, so every row is a company that can legally haul for hire that week. More in MC number vs DOT number.
Questions
- Does a new USDOT number mean a new trucking company?
- Not always. Private fleets, intrastate carriers and companies whose authority never goes active all get USDOT numbers. A newly granted operating authority is the stronger sign that a company is starting to haul freight for pay across state lines, which is why sellers watch grants rather than registrations.
