What Is the MCS-150 Form?

Reviewed

The MCS-150 is the Motor Carrier Identification Report, the form carriers use to register and update their USDOT information. It records the company's name, address, officers, contact details, operation type, cargo classes, power units and drivers. FMCSA requires an update every 24 months even if nothing changed, and a missed update can deactivate the USDOT number.

The biennial update

FMCSA's schedule uses the USDOT number itself. The last digit sets the month the update is due, and the next-to-last digit sets the year: odd digits file in odd-numbered years, even digits in even-numbered years. FMCSA says updating is free and that failing to update can bring civil penalties as well as deactivation.

Since May 2026, registration and updates happen in Motus. FMCSA paused USDOT inactivations for missed biennial updates due on or after June 1, 2026, while the new system settled.

Where MCS-150 data shows up

Because the data is self-reported and updated every two years, a new carrier's registration details are freshest right after it registers. Rookiefeed adds those fields to each new authority grant; every column is defined in new authority data fields.

Questions

Do I need to file an MCS-150 if nothing changed?
Yes. FMCSA requires every registered entity to update its information every 24 months even when nothing has changed or the company has stopped operating. Missing the update can deactivate the USDOT number. Name, address or business-form changes must be reported within 30 days, separately from the biennial schedule.
