# What happens after your MC authority is granted

> Once FMCSA grants your authority, your status turns Active and you can haul regulated freight for pay across state lines. Your liability insurance and BOC-3 are already on file, because authority can't go active without them. Lead lists pick up your new authority within days, which is why the calls start, and your 18-month new entrant period has begun.

## What's already on file when you're granted

For first-time carriers granted between September 20, 2026 and October 19, 2026, the median time from application to active authority was 25 days. FMCSA's guidance is 20 to 25 business days for a complete application.

- Liability insurance: your insurer filed proof of coverage with FMCSA (BMC-91 or [BMC-91X](https://rookiefeed.com/glossary/bmc-91)). FMCSA tells applicants to have their insurer file right after they get their docket number.
- A [process agent](https://rookiefeed.com/glossary/process-agent) filing ([BOC-3](https://rookiefeed.com/glossary/boc-3)), naming agents who can accept legal papers for you in the states you operate in.
- Your registration details: legal name, address, phone, email, officers, fleet size and cargo, as you entered them in [Motus](https://rookiefeed.com/glossary/motus). FMCSA warns that a name or address that doesn't match your other filings delays the grant.
- Cargo insurance or a bond if your authority type requires it, such as household goods.

## Your paperwork

FMCSA says [operating authority](https://rookiefeed.com/glossary/operating-authority) documents normally go out within 3 to 4 business days after the grant. If 10 or more business days pass without yours, FMCSA asks you to call 800-832-5660 or use its web form. You can also confirm your status with FMCSA directly.

## Why the phone starts ringing

Your new authority gets noticed fast. Many companies watch for new carriers every day: factoring companies, insurance agents, dispatchers, compliance services, load boards and plenty of scammers. New carriers on trucking forums describe 20 or more calls a day in the first weeks.

Some of those calls are worth taking. Brokers also call the number on your authority to confirm you're really the carrier. If you want fewer of the rest, see [why new carriers get so many calls](https://rookiefeed.com/guides/why-new-carriers-get-so-many-calls) for what you can do about it.

## What to expect in the first weeks

- Broker setup packets. Expect to send your authority letter, W-9 and certificate of insurance. Some brokers won't load very new authorities, so ask before you quote.
- Cash flow pressure. Broker invoices take weeks to pay while fuel is due now, which is why factoring offers arrive early. Compare advance rates, fees and recourse terms before you sign anything long-term.
- Your new entrant period. FMCSA monitors new carriers for 18 months and conducts a safety audit within 12 months of starting operations. Missing a drug and alcohol testing program or operating without required insurance are automatic failures.
- Keeping filings alive. If your insurer cancels and no replacement is on file, FMCSA can involuntarily suspend your authority. The same happens if your BOC-3 is cancelled. Thousands of authorities are inactivated for exactly these reasons.
- Fake compliance letters. Mail and email that looks official, asking you to pay for an update or filing, is common. Check anything like that in Motus or with FMCSA directly before paying.

## If you sell to new carriers

Everything above is the carrier's first month, and it's the context for a useful call: who insured them, what they haul, whether this is their first authority. Rookiefeed sends every carrier granted authority the day before with those details. Rookiefeed is $59 a month for one state once a week, $149 for one state every day, $299 for up to 8 states and $599 for every state, and you can cancel any time. Carriers who'd rather not be on our list can email hello@greatwork.company with their [USDOT number](https://rookiefeed.com/glossary/usdot-number), and we'll suppress it within 10 business days. See the [privacy page](https://rookiefeed.com/privacy).

## Questions

### Can I start hauling the day my authority is granted?

Once your authority status shows Active, you have the authority to operate. Brokers will still ask for your authority letter, W-9 and certificate of insurance before tendering loads, and some won't work with very new authorities, so the first load can take longer than the grant.

### How long until I get my authority letter?

FMCSA says operating authority documents are normally sent within 3 to 4 business days after the grant. If 10 or more business days pass without it, call FMCSA at 800-832-5660 or submit a ticket through its contact center web form.

### When will FMCSA do my new entrant safety audit?

FMCSA monitors new carriers for 18 months and conducts the safety audit within 12 months after you begin operations, usually at your principal place of business. Having no drug and alcohol testing program or operating without required insurance are automatic failures.

### What happens if my insurance is cancelled after the grant?

Your insurer files the cancellation with FMCSA. If no replacement policy meeting the minimum coverage is on file by the effective date, your authority can be involuntarily suspended for no insurance. You'd need new coverage filed, and possibly a reinstatement, to haul again.
