# What Are Power Units in Trucking?

> Power units are the self-propelled vehicles a carrier operates: trucks and tractors it owns, term-leases or trip-leases, as reported on its MCS-150 registration. They're the standard way to measure a trucking company's size, so "a one-truck carrier" means one power unit. Trailers are counted separately and never as power units, because they don't move on their own.

## What the count does and doesn't tell you

- Self-reported: the carrier enters the number at registration, and FMCSA only asks for an update every 24 months, so a fast-growing carrier's count can lag.
- Owned and leased together: a carrier leasing a truck shows it as a power unit just like one it owns.
- Not drivers: drivers are a separate field. More drivers than trucks can mean team driving or hiring ahead of new trucks.

## Power units on new carriers

67% of the 5,591 carriers granted authority in the 30 days ending October 19, 2026 reported a single power unit. Most new authorities are owner-operators who drive their own truck, which is why fleet size is the first filter most buyers set.

Rookiefeed shows power units, tractors, trailers and drivers on every new carrier row and filters by fleet size before the morning email. ## Questions

### Does a trailer count as a power unit?

No. A power unit is a truck or tractor that moves under its own power. Trailers are reported in their own field on the carrier's registration. A carrier listing one tractor and two trailers is still a one-power-unit carrier, which FMCSA data and most buyers treat as a one-truck operation.
