# What Is an MC Number?

> An MC number is the docket number FMCSA gives a motor carrier's operating authority. You need one, on top of a USDOT number, to haul federally regulated freight owned by others for pay across state lines. Having the number doesn't mean you can haul yet: the authority behind it goes active only after FMCSA grants it and the insurance and process agent filings are on record.

## What the number stands for

MC is one of three docket prefixes FMCSA uses for interstate authority. MC covers motor carriers and brokers, FF covers freight forwarders and MX covers Mexico-domiciled carriers. A [USDOT number](https://rookiefeed.com/glossary/usdot-number) identifies the company for safety oversight; the MC docket records its [operating authority](https://rookiefeed.com/glossary/operating-authority), the permission to work for hire.

Under Motus, FMCSA's fact sheet says new docket numbers are randomized and each newly granted authority gets its own docket, so a carrier can hold more than one. Existing numbers didn't change, and a higher number no longer means a newer company.

## When an MC number becomes usable

FMCSA granted for-hire authority on 5,591 carrier dockets in the 30 days ending October 19, 2026. Rookiefeed sends each one the morning after the grant, with the MC and USDOT numbers on the row. Check any single docket with the [MC number lookup](https://rookiefeed.com/mc-number-lookup).

- The carrier applies and gets a docket number with the authority pending.
- The insurer files proof of liability coverage on a [BMC-91 or BMC-91X](https://rookiefeed.com/glossary/bmc-91).
- A process agent company files the [BOC-3](https://rookiefeed.com/glossary/boc-3).
- FMCSA grants the authority and the status turns Active.

## Questions

### Is an MC number the same as a DOT number?

No. A USDOT number is a safety registration that private fleets and intrastate carriers can hold too. An MC number is a docket for operating authority, the federal permission to haul regulated freight for pay across state lines. Many for-hire interstate carriers hold both, and the MC docket is tied to the USDOT number.

### Did Motus get rid of MC numbers?

No. FMCSA's Motus fact sheet says the system keeps issuing docket numbers with the MC, MX and FF prefixes, and existing numbers stay the same. What changed is that new numbers are randomized and each newly granted authority gets its own docket.
